Question:
Why do I need to bother with obtaining a building permit?
Answer:
Submitting your project for plan approval and the permit process ensures that minimum standards are met to protect you and your family's safety, health and welfare. It is possible that if a fire or other property damage occurs and there is no record of plan review and inspections, your home owner's insurance will not cover the costs of rebuilding.
Question:
Do I need a building permit for a deck?
Answer:
Yes, if the deck is larger than 200 square feet; or, is higher than 72" above finished grade; or, is attached to the house.
Question:
Do I need a building permit for a fence?
Answer:
If the fence is less than 6 feet in height, you will only need a Certificate of Zoning Compliance. If the fence is more than 6 feet in height, you will need both a Certificate of Zoning Compliance and a building permit.
Question:
Do I need a building permit for a storage shed?
Answer:
One-story accessory structures less than 200 square feet do not require a building permit, only a Certificate of Zoning Compliance.
Question:
Do I need a permit for a patio or sidewalk?
Answer:
There is no building permit required for pouring concrete on grade. You will, however, need a Certificate of Zoning Compliance.
