Description of Services
The Canal Winchester Division of Water Reclamation is dedicated to providing the citizens of Canal Winchester and the environment with the treatment and collection of wastewater in the most economical, safe and reliable manner in the present and for the future.
The Division of Water Reclamation has over 52 miles of sewer collection mains and more than 550 manholes throughout the village and the neighboring community of Pickerington. Eleven pump stations located at various locations in the village move sewage from lower to higher flow lines, ultimately gravity feeding the sewage to the village’s treatment facility located at the Public Works Complex on Ashbrook Rd. The nearby communities of Pickerington and Lithopolis have connections to the Canal Winchester sewer system as well, with Pickerington using two pump stations owned and maintained by Canal Winchester to deliver the sewage for treatment.
Canal Winchester’s original treatment facility was constructed in the 1930’s. A new facility was constructed in 1960 at its current location with an upgrade occurring in 1986 and again in 1998 to its present day capacity of 2.5 million gallons per day (MGD). The facility is a state-of-the-art conventional activated sludge treatment system that achieves over 96% pollutant removal. The process consists of primary pumping/degritting/screening and secondary treatment using Schreiber activated sludge technology. Ultraviolet disinfection completes the process prior to discharge into Walnut Creek.
