The Village of Canal Winchester is eager to assist you in starting your new business or relocating your existing business. The Village has worked hard to simplify the development process to ensure a rapid approval process. This will ensure your business is up and running quickly to avoid any lost revenues.

The typical approval process is as follows:

  1. Staff Consultation (optional)
The staff has found that an initial meeting to discuss the project can really help the property owners in their initial site development. The staff can assist the property owners through the process and point out any problem areas.

  2. Planning and Zoning Commission approval
Depending on the complexity of the project, the Planning and Zoning Commission takes action quickly to ensure a rapid process. The Commission meets once a month on the second Monday of the month. The deadline for application is 21 days prior to the meeting.

  3. Village Council approval (if necessary)
If the property is zoned in one of the Villages Planned Development Districts, the Village Council approval is necessary. The approval time on these projects varies.

  4. Engineering approval
Immediately after approval by Council or Commission, our engineers and Public Works Department will review the plan and submit comments back to the property owner or the property owners engineer.

  5. Building Department approval
Following engineering approval, the project is eligible for Building Department review and building permits. Following the construction, the Building Department also approves occupancy.
